Conclusion

At the end of my research, I discovered that: No, opioids are not necessary to counter pain post-op. In the beginning of this project when I created my essential question, I never researched opioids, so a majority of what I knew prior to this project was general knowledge. I found that there are more beneficial multi-model methods to pain control to still be prescribing narcotics. Although, I do think that if a patient is dealing with more pain than usual, that is an extenuating circumstance that I think would be okay to use opioids as long as the patient is educated correctly on the adequate dosage and proper way to stop using narcotics after the recommended time. The routine that I observed at my mentorship to attempt to decrease the need for opioids I believe is the correct way that medical professionals should handle it. For orthopedic surgeries, the patient had to attend a joint class to learn about after-care, and after surgery, they were educated again, and went home with minimal pain with pain control for up to five days with the regional block. So to answer my essential question of Are opioids necessary to counter the effects of pain post-op; No, Opioids are not necessary for pain control.
