Are opioids necessary to counter the effects of pain post-op?

Why did I choose this question?
I selected this as my essential question because I believe this ties into the extreme opioid addiction in the Atlanta area. As I have watched my mentors in their field, they have explained to me that Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia is a common issue with post-op patients they see everyday. I believe that with the right techniques and combinations of medicines and practices, we can decrease dependence on opioids.
What excites me about this topic and why do I have a desire to find out more about this topic?
What excites me most about researching my essential question will be being able to reveal to people that not much more medicine than over the counter meds like aleve or aspirin could alleviate their pain better than opioids would. I think this question I chose reflects a desire I have to know whether or not opioids are necessary. Prescribed opioids post-surgery have created an unnecessary opioid addiction.
